Flexity Concept Affordable Housing | Community Housing Design

‘Flexity concept’ housing is
affordable housing that can adapt to the changing needs of users
in low income community of urban area.

It is recently widely used in developed countries such as America but it is yet implemented in Malaysia. It highlights the affordable housing through flexible and expandable space as an alternative squatter housing and a means of redefining affordable housing.

The rationale for this design is to provide a mechanism for low income group to generate extra income for their family through the introduction of ‘flexity concept’ design in the new affordable housing scheme. Furthermore, this paper highlights the flexibility of the space and building program in order to justify its possibilities to implement in developing countries. The concept will consider unknown future changes of building layouts and structures. It will consider the minimum reconstruction, or renovation, costs associated for future adaptation and the new building program will be proposed.

First of all, the ‘flexity concept’ housing allow the user to have the control of their own dwelling. They can have the choice of making the dwelling as life time home housing or subjected to the final construction of the dwelling socially. Secondly, it has the potential for the user to change and configure the space according to their own needs. Thirdly, it is able to avoid unnecessary building cost which refers to the major renovation and maintenance fees. The technical consideration of the dwelling to be upgrade, extend or expand will be the other plus point for the ‘flexity concept’ housing.

  2. If you don't mind I have a few questions to your proposal.
How do you justify the success of such project type in Malaysia and what are your proposed solution to possible issues that might arise? Let's say how do we ensure the market and farm will be well maintained?
